History

In summer 2001 we changed our name from The Princes' Award Foundation to The Royal Awards Foundation.

Since 1996 we have presented an award every year in Copenhagen, the Princes’ Award, to the best European audio-visual production. In the year 2000 the event took place on 8th June in the City Hall of Copenhagen. The past year was our first as a European operation with ongoing projects in a number of countries. We also saw our Board expand. It now includes members from six countries representing ten different organisations - including members from corporations, local authorities, universities, NGOs, trade associations and unions. It became apparent that we needed to signal these changes in a most noticeable way. We needed to give way to the Royal Awards Foundation - Awards for Sustainability.

If you click of the front page of our Activity Report you will get a PDF version of the complete report telling you more about our initiatives aimed to improve awareness about the environment and networking of the doers: cities and companies in working towards a more sustainable Europe.

The Princes’ Award Foundation is named after our two patrons: His Royal Highness Crown Prince Felipe of Spain and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark.

An Honorary Committee of prominent European personalities secures the integrity and prestige of the awards:

  • The former President of the Republic of Iceland, Vigdis Finbogadottir
  • The former President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors
  • The former President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev
  • The President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel
  • The former President of Portugal, Mario Soares

From 1996 to 1999 the Princes' Award Foundation's objective has been met by giving three awards for best audiovisual productions - one in each of the following categories:

  1. Documentary
  2. Fiction
  3. Multimedia (CD-Roms, homepages)
