It is an independent organisation initiated by the European Environment Agency, in Copenhagen, The Copenhagen based waste-management company R98, the City of Copenhagen and Scandinavian airline company SAS.

The Royal Awards for Sustainability is a catalyst organisation whose role is to initiate environment and sustainable development projects and awards. We see environmental and sustainability issues as fundamental to the overall organisational and managerial structure of any organisation. Terms like Corporate Citizenship, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Leadership are the corner stones of the Royal Awards for Sustainability.

Our Modus Operandi

Located at the European Environment Agency, the Royal Awards for Sustainability has strong links with other research institutions enabling it to spot the latest trends and emerging issues before they reach the public eye. Its flexible and communication-oriented organisation is able to quickly react and provide briefs to quickly set up new platforms that will assist in disseminating information on these matters to local authorities and other stakeholders.

From its position in Copenhagen, the Royal Awards for Sustainability approaches a suitable hosting city and research institutions with a request to jointly develop a platform on a set topic. The early involvement of local authority creates a strong base on which to anchor the project and to quickly create a local secretariat and steering committee.

The Royal Awards for Sustainability will assist in the creation of the organisational structure, its overall objectives and strategies. The local project staffing, financing and day-to-day activities are the responsibilities of the local partners. The Royal Awards remains a member of the steering committee and acts as a strategic partner.

It is on the international level the strength of the Royal Awards for Sustainability lies. The link between the various awards, the involved authorities and research institutions will ensure the awards’ integrity and cutting-edge relevance. Furthermore the established networks of the Royal Awards for Sustainability are utilised to disseminate relevant findings and best practices internationally.
